Collectors Concerned About Authenticity of 09 Ruth/Gehrig 1/1 Cut Auto

A very interesting discussion going on over at the Blowout Cards Forums, where some forum members are voicing their concerns about the authenticity of the Babe Ruth cut autograph from a 2009 Topps Triple Threads Ruth/Lou Gehrig Dual 1/1 Book Card.

A newspaper in Massachusetts originally printed a story about collector Aaron Norton pulling the card on Feb. 11th. Blowout Forums re-printed the story on February 12.  A person claiming to be Norton, said "the card had been sent to PSA DNA for verification."  That was on February 19th.

The card is currently on eBay, with no PSA/DNA authentication. Collectors on the forum are worried PSA/DNA rejected the Ruth autograph as a forgery. The auction still has over 6 days left and has a high bid of $5,800.00.  Let's hope savvy collectors can get to the bottom of this before the auction closes.

Update: Card taken off eBay. A member of Freedom Cardboard posted this response that s/he got from eBay:

Thanks for your interest in this listing:

While the vast majority of trade on our site is legitimate, we take many steps to protect our buyers from sellers who may offer items that are not authentic. One of them is to remove items reported to us as allegedly infringing through eBay's VeRO program. In this case, we removed the listing because the owner of a copyright and/or trademark in this product has reported to us that they believe the item may not be authentic.

We hope you'll understand that this action is intended to help protect you as a buyer.

Update II: Please be sure to check out Balk Four, and their write up about the card they did in January. Including pictures of other Ruth authentic autographs that do differ from the signature found on this 2009 Triple Threads Book Card.

  1. I swear I left a the internetz ate it?

Anyways, don't want to step on your toes, but:

The authenticity has always been questioned on this card and to find out that he was going to get it authenticated and now there is NO proof of that in the auction, i'd be extremely leery of that auction.

  2. And, just like that, the auction has been pulled by eBay, due to authenticity concerns.

  3. Awesome! Thank you for sharing. Good to know their are many out there who are keeping tabs on these issues.

  4. Not a problem and thanks for the shout out!!

I look forward to helping with any news in the future :D

  5. The card has been returned to the ebay auction with additional comments and documentation.

  6. the Ruth sig is awful, just a pathetic joke and a big time mistake by Topps
