2011-12 Upper Deck Exquisite Basketball

It's back! Ok, sure, it's still with the college uniforms. Nothing can be done about that. But Exquisite is the godfather of modern day basketball card sets. You had 03-04 with LeBron, 07-08 with Durant. Over the years this set has produced some of the most sought after basketball cards on the market. Exquisite returns in 11-12, with an added surprise, one Michael Jordan autograph per case. Also per case you'll get another 'graph of either Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, LeBron, or Bill Russell. That comes straight from the horses mouth.
Scheduled release date is October 16, 2012. 1 pack per box with 5 total autographs per box. Look for a huge price tag per box/case because of the 1 per case Jordan autographs. The checklist should be eerily similar to the Fleer Retro set that came out just one month prior. Regardless of the NCAA uniforms, this set will be hot. Who knows what will happen on the secondary market. Fleer Retro boxes exploded upward to $500 a box (pre sale was $200).  Exquisite could be too high a gamble, but the basketball card market is strong worldwide and sometimes people underestimate that many of these cards go overseas. Baseball and especially Football cards are primarily only collected in the United States. Basketball is a global game with a huge following in many different countries.

2012 Upper Deck Sp Authentic Golf

For the first time since 2005, Upper Deck will release 2012 Sp Authentic Golf featuring some of the biggest names on the PGA and LPGA tour. 20 packs per box with 4 cards per pack and 3 autographs per box. Because Upper Deck hasn't released a golf set since 2005, players who have never had a card in Upper Deck are eligible to have a rookie autograph card. Some of those rookie auto's include: Stockton, CA native Ricky Barnes, Dustin Johnson, Morgan Pressel and more.  Look for at least one autograph rookie card #/699 or less per box.
Some of the best sellers from the set will be some of the LPGA cards. Don't sleep on the female market. Players like Pressel, Brittany Lincicome, Natalie Gulbis and others have a huge following of fans who will be willing to pay good money for an autograph. Other big cards include, obviously, anything with a Tiger Woods autograph, and there are quite a few available in the set. The Immortal inks, serial numbered #/10, include names like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Woods and Ernie Els. Those will sell for a lot.

There are some cards in 2012 Sp Authentic Golf for you even if you aren't a fan of golf. 30 players from other sports have base cards and several have autographs available in the set. The Parade of Stars base cards include: Michael Jordan, Aaron Rodgers, Bo Jackson, Wayne Gretzky and more. The Parade of Stars cards feature the athletes pictured playing golf.

Jean Segura 2012 Topps Finest Redemption #5

Milwaukee Brewers prospect Jean Segura rounds out the 2012 Topps Finest Baseball autograph redemption cards. Segura was traded to the Brewers from the Angels during 2012. The Finest autograph will feature Segura in a Brewers uniform and all collectors holding redemption card #5 from 2012 Finest can redeem it for the Segura autograph.
The five total redemption cards are #1 Starling Marté, #2 Brett Jackson, #3 Mike Trout, #4 Josh Rutledge and finally #5 Segura. Collectors will often gamble with these cards as it is not known what the five redemption cards will be when the product goes live. Topps took about a month and a half to release all the names for the redemption program. The release date of Finest was August 8, 2012 and they made the final announcement of Segura on September 21, 2012.

1989 Pete Rose Banishment Document Up For Sale

Goldin Auctions will be offering the 1989 Pete Rose Banishment Document issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball for sale in their Fall 2012 auction. The five page document has a letter of authenticity from Rose himself as well as PSA/DNA authentication. Minimum bid is $100,000 with the auction starting on October 10, 2012.

In addition to the Rose banishment documents, over 1,000 items will be sold in Goldin Auctions debut auction.  Some of the guys associated with Goldin Auctions have been around the business for many years. Browse their company website for information and details about the upcoming auction. Other big items up for sale in the Fall 2012 Goldin Auction include: a 1934 NY Yankees Signed Baseball, a 1864 Abraham Lincoln Signed Civil War Document, and a 1995-96 Michael Jordan Game Worn Jersey. Goldin claims to have one of the lowest buyers premiums on the market at 10%. Meaning whatever you win the auction for, the buyer must pay an additional 10% on top of that price. Buyer's premiums are typical practice of all auction houses.

Will someone pony up over $100,000 to buy the Rose documents? That remains to be seen.  They come from Pete Rose himself, in the LOA, Rose says these documents are his personal copy. Certainly the 5-page document is one of the most unique pieces in sports collectibles. It's signed by Rose, Rueven J. Katz (Rose's attorney), Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti and Deputy Commissioner Fay Vincent. Here is the link to the auction which starts 10/10/2012.

Fleer Retro PMGs Light Up eBay's Most Watched

Six of the most watched sports cards on eBay from September 12, 2012 - September 18, 2012 were from the 2011-12 Fleer Retro Basketball set and four of them were the Precious Metal Gems (PMG) insert cards. A total of five Michael Jordan cards and one Magic Johnson PMG Green ranked in the top 10.

Collectors have flocked to buy 11-12 Upper Deck Retro Basketball pushing box prices north of $500 just weeks after release (originally solicited for $200 a box). The PMG's are not the only thing collectors are after, the rare Jambalaya cards are really rare, less then 25 for each player and a Jordan sold for $1,511.00 during the week. That might end up being a good deal, only time will tell but I'd scrounge up some money to pay at least $1,000 for one of those right now.
Besides the six Fleer Retro cards, a PSA 10 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie ranked number two on the top ten and sold for a little over $8,000.00.  A rare 1/1 Mike Trout rookie autograph from 2012 Tier One was the most watched baseball card checking in at number five on the list. Check out Sports Card Radio for a weekly top 10 list of eBay's most watched cards.

2012 Heritage Minor League Baseball

2012 Heritage Minor League Baseball is a set that can be overlooked.  It's all minor league players so that eliminates a segment of the market that only cares about Jeter, Pujols and Posey. The autographs in 2012 Heritage Minor League are all sticker applied which hampers what their value could become. But it's a great set for people who love to see the young prospect kids on cardboard and also, above all else, it's great for autograph hounds at spring training, the Arizona Fall League and the minor league parks themselves to get in person autographs of the prospects in the set.
Some of the key players in the set include: Billy Hamilton, Dylan Bundy, Manny Machado and many more. A total of 225 in the base + sp set (200 base cards 25 sp cards). Hobby box breakdown is 24 Packs Per Box and 9 cards per pack. 2 autograph cards and 1 relic per hobby box. Personally, I wouldn't open a box of this but will be in the market for single cards of Hamilton, Michael Choice, A.J. Kirby Jones, A.J. Cole and several other players that I have seen in person.

Much like the regular version of 2012 Heritage Baseball, the set includes 25 color swap variations of cards in the base set. Check this guide for pictures of the cards and how to determine if you have a Heritage Sp Card.

2012 Panini Cooperstown Baseball

2012 Panini Cooperstown Baseball looks like a winner. Sure, there will be no logos, but don't let the lack of a license sway you away from these cards.  Panini got a ton of on-card autographs in this set of past legends. Some of them include: Yogi Berra #/99, Stan Musial #/50, Nolan Ryan #/75, Vin Scully #/100 and many more. These are all on-card! There are some sticker autographs in the Cooperstown Signatures (1 Per Box) set but they are of players who have deceased.
In addition, there will be no redemption cards in 2012 Panini Cooperstown Baseball.  You won't have to wait for that Hall-of-Fame autograph to come in the mail and get redeemed. All of the autographs will be live in the set. Release date for Panini Cooperstown is scheduled for September 19, 2012 with the box breakdown of: 24 packs and 5 cards per pack. Look for cut signature cards of: Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax and more.

2012/13 Panini Prestige Basketball

12-13 Panini Prestige Basketball releases September 14, 2012 and it's stacked and packed with a double rookie class featuring Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Austin Rivers, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and many more. 100 total rookie cards highlight the Prestige Basketball set and collectors typically enjoy this low-mid end product from Panini.
There are some things to be excited about Prestige other then the double rookie class that was forced by the NBA lockout of 2011.  The Old School autograph cards might be interesting, but will be a difficult pull as they are numbered to #/99 or less. Some interesting former players in the Old School autograph set include: Vlade Divac, Detlef Schrempf, John Stockton and many more. Some of these guys don't have a lot of autograph cards on the market.

A Prestige Basketball hobby box breaks down to 24 Packs Per Box, 8 Cards Per pack with 3 Autograph Cards, 1 Memorabilia Card and a total of 24 Rookie Cards per box. Base set equals 150 total cards with  100 rookie cards. Be sure to check out Sports Card Radio for the full preview and checklist of the set.

Free Precious Metal Gems Price Guide

Looking for prices for the 2011-12 Upper Deck Fleer Retro Basketball Precious Metal Gems (PMG)? On Sports Card Radio they will have an updated weekly price guide for all things 11-12 Precious Metal Gems. Some of the early sales have been huge for the big players like Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Magic Johnson. Some collectors may be turned off by the college uniforms and the fact that the Red PMG's are serial numbered to #/150 instead of the traditional #/90 (the first 10 in the print run from back in the day featured the green border giving the red's 90 total copies).
Precious Metal Gems were made popular in the mid-1990's from the Fleer Metal Universe sets. Those cards were so hard to get back then from those mass produced products. The new PMG's in 11-12 Fleer Retro Basketball may not ever reach the staggering prices the old ones do, but the market is very strong for these cards that feature no autograph or game used piece.

1997-98 Skybox Metal Universe Kevin Garnett Metal Gem

The most watched basketball card on eBay is this 1997-98 Skybox Metal Universe Kevin Garnett Precious Metal Gem Red #69/100. Over the last several years the Precious Metal Gem insert cards have risen in popularity and prices have exploded in value for the stars and common cards alike. Keep in mind these cards are very condition sensitive as the red and green borders easily chipped and fray. The cards are serial numbered on the back to 100. The first 10 in the print run have the green border, the last 90 in the print run have the red border.
Look for Upper Deck to produce new versions of the Precious Metal Gem insert cards in their upcoming 2011-12 Fleer Rookie Retro Basketball product.

2012 Topps Finest Rookie Redemption #1 Starling Marte

The recently released 2012 Topps Finest Baseball has five autograph rookie redemption cards randomly inserted with the odds of 1:72 mini boxes. On August 10, 2012 Topps released the name of the very first rookie redemption autograph in finest, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte.
While this will be Starling's very first MLB rookie card but he does have quite a few prospect card offerings including versions available in 2011 Bowman Chrome, 2011 Bowman Sterling, 2011 Leaf Metal Draft, 2011 Topps Heritage Minor-League, and some cards in the recently released Bowman Platinum Baseball. Starling has played very well for the Pirates since his call up in late July. That has driven the price of his 2011 Bowman sterling autograph to around $20. The very first 2012 Topps Finest rookie redemption autograph card sold for $135 on eBay. It will be interesting to see if that price holds now that it has been officially released that Marte is rookie redemption number one.

Look for Topps to release the names of the other four rookie redemption autographs over the course of the next several months.

2012 Topps Football Blaster Box Break

I recently opened a retail blaster box of 2012 Topps Football cards. The box is your typical blaster and cost $20 at Target. It comes with 10 packs and eight cards per pack with one Captains NFL patch per box (which comes in a special pack). Each 8 card pack comes with a brand-new 2012 NFL rookie card including players like: Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Trent Richardson.
Overall I was impressed with the quality of the cards but if you are looking to get your money back by opening a retail blaster box of 2012 Topps Football I would strongly advise against it. For one, it is very difficult to pull an autographed card or jersey card from this type of box. While the Captains patches (1 per box) may be very nice, and some of them may sell very well at auction on eBay, by and large that patch alone is only worth a few dollars. Blaster boxes such as this one are meant to be fun with the outside possibility of getting a big pull.

Some of the cards that I really liked from the box were the 1965 Topps Tall Boys insert cards and I pulled a Ryan Grant and Cam Newton. Overall these are very nice cards. I can see people wanting to chase the entire set and not to mention the autographed versions that are going to sell very well on the secondary market.

Be sure to take a look at the 2012 Topps Football Checklist and see if their are any cards that you are interested in. The hobby boxes of this product provide much more value and the potential to get a bigger hit. Many of the cards from this box are being given away free on the Sports Card Radio Forum check out the link here for more details on that.

Upper Deck to Release Alabama Football Cards

It's a whole new world for Upper Deck. Just a few short years ago collectors would be getting jazzed up for SPx, Sp Authentic, Exquisite and other sets with players featured in NFL uniforms.  But things have gown south for the California based card company in recent years. Hit hard by the economic downturn in 2006-2010, UD was forced to downsize staff and battle many lawsuits that ultimately led to them losing out on licenses for the NBA, MLB and NFL. Upper Deck still releases some quality content though. In the sports segment, the NHL cards tend to have a high quality feel and a license with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) allows them to feature many NCAA teams in college themed sets.
In late 2011 UD released sets for the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma. Clearly these are niche sets, but from what I've found they are well received by fans of those particular college teams. In 2012, look for a couple more niche football sets - with the first one being for the University of Alabama. They've had a lot of great coaches and players come though that storied program over the years and Upper Deck was able to get a good many players - 84 with autographs - into the set. Some of the big name autographs in the set include: Bart Starr, Ken Stabler, Ozzie Newsome, Trent Richardson, Mark Ingram, Joe Namath and many more.

Scheduled Release Date: September 30, 2012

2011 Bowman Chrome Prospects Bryce Harper Superfractor

The holy grail of Bryce Harper cards is back on eBay - this time with no reserve and Harper tearing it up in his first couple weeks in the big leagues. The Superfractor 1/1 card found in 2011 Bowman Baseball is by far one of his top cards available on the market. The card has been graded by Beckett Grading Services (BGS) and received a 9.5. The sub grades are: Centering 9, Corners 9.5, Edges 10, Surface 9.5.
How much is this card worth? You can take a look back at the 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg card to get an idea. That card sold for $16,403.00 on May 10, 2010 and had an astounding 10,000+ watchers on eBay. Anything over 250 watchers on eBay for a sports card is really good. The buyer of the card later sold it to Leaf/Razor for 21,403 about a month after he originally purchased it. Both of the cards received a 9.5 grade by BGS.  Harper is unquestionably talented and could be an all-time great. But it remains to be seen how his career will play out. This card was originally listed for sale before Harper came up to the big leagues for $25,000, but by a different seller: calinick21. Expect the price to come in shy of that.

2012 Bowman Josh Bell Superfractor Autograph 1/1

One of the biggest pulls in 2012 Bowman Baseball was hit during the very first few days of release, and before the official hobby release date of the product. It is very common to see hobby pulls from Topps products on eBay before the official hobby release date so not much should be made of that fact. Josh Bell was a 2nd round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 2011. He forgo an opportunity to attend college and the Pirates had to pony up huge bonus money for Bell to sign. If he made it known he was willing to sign he would have went much higher in the draft.
The autograph superfractor from 2012 Bowman is clearly his premier card. He has other autograph cards in 2011 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Baseball and 2011 Panini Contenders Baseball for example. But this is the very first time Bell has appeared in a Bowman set and his autograph superfractor is one every collector of his would want. The seller of the card, ryanscard888, originally listed it for sale for $4,995.95.

2012 Bowman Aflac All-American Autographs

Some of the most popular cards in 2012 Bowman Baseball are the Aflac All-American Autographs from high school all-american team from years past. Every card is serial numbered and is a nice surprise in packs. The 2012 checklist includes some recent 2011 first round picks like Gerrit Cole and Sonny Gray as well as a favorite of Giants fans Andrew Susac.

2012 Gypsy Queen Tony Gwynn Sp Variation #252

The Tony Gwynn 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Sp Variation card is very difficult to spot. It is the exact same photo of the Padres Hall of Famer but cropped slightly.  The Sp card is the version where you can see his knee a little bit more. The base card is where Gwynn's knee is more covered up by the bottom of the card border. Here are some pictures to help you out.
